Most people know at least the basic baby things. You understand that babies do not recognize most people right away. You already know that a baby will understand on instinct who his mother is even within a minute of being born. You already understand that no two babies are going to develop at the same exact rate. Baby's do not follow a pre-set schedule for milestones. You might be surprised to learn that there are plenty of other things to learn about child development and babies. Infancy is a fascinating period in human development. A life changes so much between the time it is conceived and the time it starts going to school. It doesn't look like babies do all that much in their first years of life but beneath that calm (and sometimes fussy) exterior is a factory that is working like mad to grow, change and develop!
Babies can sense light changes even in the womb. Millions of fibers and nerve endings connect together to create your eyes. The coordination needed for the eyes to function properly is extraordinary. A baby has eyes that are useful within a few months of being conceived. Even as early as six months after conception your baby will show signs of light sensitivity. Another interesting fact about babies: most Caucasian babies will not show their "true" eye color until a few months after they are born. Babies born with blue eyes often do not keep that eye color. Don't get too set on the color blue you see in a newborn's eyes. They might not stay that way!
Babies are able to recognize music while they are still in the womb. By the thirty fourth week of development in the womb a baby can hear and identify songs. That means that this happens more than a month before the baby is born! Sometimes the babies will even "dance" to different beats. This could mean that a person's musical taste is instinctual instead of conditioned. Isn't that amazing?
Even though you want to avoid mercury, you can still have fish-just make sure it is a mercury free species! Many doctors recommend eating salmon regularly because it does not contain mercury the way other fish do and because it contains all sorts of healthy things that a mother needs for her growing fetus. There are experts out there who believe that eating fish while she is pregnant can help a mother improve the function of her baby's brain and that will help her child develop superior communication skills later in life-more so than those children born to mothers who did not eat fish. This has not yet been proven beyond a doubt so if you do not eat fish, there is no need to panic.
There is lots of baby knowledge out there that is not well known. This is ironic since having extra information usually helps an adult with his or her patience levels.
The best way to parent a baby is to arm yourself with lots of knowledge about childhood development. Have fun!
