A Beginner's Guide to Improving Your Bowling

It may be hard to believe, but there is considerably more to bowling than tossing a ball down the lane to take out the pins at the end. It takes technique and skill to bowl a good game, and any fan of bowling will tell you this. So how do you improve your game? Here are a few tips to help you be a better bowler.

If you are a very new bowler one of the most important techniques that you need to remember is to keep your bowling arm relaxed. Tension in your bowling technique is bad for your game and it also makes it more likely that you will get hurt. When you grip the bowling ball, be especially sure to keep your thumb relaxed. When you grip the ball, your thumb should fit well inside the thumb hole of the ball; otherwise a proper grip is not possible. If your grip is too tense or not comfortable you're likely to use more force than is necessary when you release the ball. An overly muscular delivery causes you to have less control over the ball. Without control, you may find your balls going every which way, or even into the gutter!

It's best if you use your own footwear. Sure most bowling alleys will rent shoes to you if you are just a casual bowler. If you plan on spending quite a bit of time playing then you really need to have your own bowling shoes. Having your own shoes will ensure that your feet are comfortable and that you have the right arch support during the game. Painful shoes will cause you to lose focus and your game will be off. You need to consider getting your shoes ready as well by rubbing the toes and heels with a wire brush. You won't slide as much while you are playing as your shoes will have more traction.

You can avoid the dreaded 'gutter balls' by very gently putting a slight twist on your fingers when you release. This will allow the ball to slightly curve 'away' from the gutter. You can 'steer' your ball into the pin center by putting some 'hook' into it. That's what you're doing with the slight finger twist. Be careful! Too much finger twisting will send your ball into the opposite gutter.
