Home Schooling Guidelines For Parents

Many parents are dissatisfied with public education and are home schooling their kids instead. Children often face overcrowded classrooms and dangers such as drugs and violence in public schools. Home schooling appeals to parents who want some say in what their children learn, and who want to make sure they're in a supportive environment. Before you begin home schooling, however, you should be prepared for what is actually involved.

Needless to say, you must make certain that home schooling is the best choice for you and your family before you make a firm commitment. It's all too possible that you might decide, several months into home schooling, that it wasn't a good idea. Then, you will have to enroll your children into public schools again. You and your family should take the time to discuss this decision in depth so that everyone has a realistic picture of what it will be like, and you must have the support of all family members. Can your family survive economically if one parent has to give up a paying job in order to stay home and teach the kids full-time? This is an obstacle that a lot of potential home school parents have to face realistically. You should also consider how well your child is likely to adjust to this, as some kids seem to do better when home schooled while others fit in more naturally in a group environment. Even though you are homeschooling, state standards still must be taught; this is why many schools operate home schooling programs under what is called an "umbrella program". These types of programs are not voluntary in some states. Depending upon the state that you live in, this is either mandated or is a choice made available to the parents that are teaching their kids. The curriculum, with most programs, is already established making it very easy for parents to provide lesson plans in this manner. There is little freedom in such a situation, however, which is something you need to consider if it is an option. If your state does not mandate belonging to an umbrella program, you may want to make a choice in the other direction.

If you're going to be home schooling, you should keep detailed records of everything you do. It makes sense to do this, and in some cases local laws might compel you to keep records. Keep file folders and/or online records of every subject you cover, the books you work with and the number of hours spent on each topic.

That way, if anyone asks you to produce records for any reason, you'll have them handy. It can also be useful for your own purposes, to keep track of what you've accomplished in the past. In the final analysis, the hardest part of home schooling is making the initial decision and then putting your plans into action. In order to successfully establish a home school, your concept of school as a place you send your children to for someone else to teach will have to change, and you must be prepared for the challenges that will crop up. Whichever type of home schooling you decide upon - home schooling just your children, online home schooling, or a home schooling co-op - once things are going smoothly, you will be glad you made this decision for the benefit of your children.
