Gardening Mistakes That Beginners Frequently Make

You've probably looked at pictures in gardening magazines - or online - and you have a pretty good idea of how your garden should look with it's in full production. However, many people make gardening mistakes that prevent their gardens from really thriving as they should. It doesn't even have to be a big mistake. Little factors such as how you water, which plants you choose, and where you decide to put your garden can make the difference between success and failure. With this article, we hope to save you the trouble of making some of the commonplace errors that new gardeners tend to make.

Make sure you have adequate tools when you begin gardening. If you have not acquired the correct tools, you can cause a simple undertaking to grow into a major issue. When you are turning the earth with your shovel and are unnecessarily laboring; this may suggest that the shovel is in need of sharper edge. Tools such as shovels, spades and pruning shears must be sharp, or you'll be spending hours in your garden while making little progress. You may be straining your back carrying heavy tools around your yard, when a garden cart could make this so much easier. Lacking basic tools can subvert your gardening efforts, and some people give up thinking that simple tasks are just too hard when the real problem was that they didn't acquire the right tools.

People that have a garden usually do not like to weed it because it takes too much time and is sometimes difficult. It is essential that weeding be done on a daily basis so that your garden is safe and looks beautiful due to your efforts. Not weeding enough is a common mistake that prevents many gardens from reaching their true potential. You can do simple things like put mulch or ground cover on the soil - this will help, if you still need to make sure it is under control. Some gardeners will grow their plants in containers. Doing so prevents the weeds from spreading so easily and makes it much more manageable. No matter what you do, weeds will sprout - however, container gardening makes this process much more manageable.

Don't overlook the quality of your soil. This is one oversight that beginners make and it can make a huge impact on the production of your plants. The health of your garden depends on the health of the soil you use. Do a test on the pH of your soil before you even begin planting. This will tell you if your soil is alkaline or acid. Your nursery or garden center, or even online, are good places to buy a pH Test Kit. If your soil is not healthy, you can either add fertilizer to it or purchase good soil at your local nursery. Using compost or fertilizer on a regular basis will help you maintain the health of your soil and ensure that your plants are well nourished.

To avoid all of the common mistakes, especially those made by beginning gardeners, do your due diligence before planting this year. You need to focus on having fun as well, not just the mistakes that could be made. All gardeners make mistakes so don't worry about making one or two along the way. Your gardening will actually improve as you make mistakes because you will learn what not to do the following season.
