Concentrating on specific indicators, like tatty leaves or plants that have grown too tall to support themselves is important because some while some plants have various trimming needs. Hedges and fruit trees are examples of landscaping that should be cut back on a regular basis. At the same time, you do not want to over-prune. Ordinarily, you should make sure not to exceed more than 25-percent of the undergrowth at one time. Because of the different kinds of plants you may have, your pruning tools could be anything from hedge trimmers to a saw for cutting branches.

Some plants are destructive to other plants, and not paying attention to the issue of invasive plants is a mistake that can cause problems for your garden. There are any number of plants that can also be a threat to your garden plants. You need to learn which plants can turn invasive - like mint - and take over large areas of your garden plot.

Goldenrod is another invasive plant. Even though it can be beautiful and colorful, if you don't keep it under control it can spread fast. Whenever you buy plants, seed packets, or order from a seed catalog, you should be able to find information on which plants are invasive or overly aggressive. Do you still want to grow mint for your tea and other reasons? If so, don't plant it in the garden. Instead, buy a half-barrel or other container and plant the mint there. You can easily sidestep a lot of gardening mishaps once you have knowledge of what some of them are. More often than not, newbie gardeners mess up, on account that they did not gain the necessary knowledge before planting. Very often, the information you need is written right on the packet of seeds you bought. As long as you ask questions when you do not know something, you will seldom make mistakes.
