For a while now I've been trying to find a bike to match my individual kind of riding:-
" I like to cover good distances on the road, but I don't fancy a super road bike with drop handlebars and a painful saddle. I travel to work by bike, so need something comfortable that will also take a bit of luggage. Mudguards are vital as well - I can't turn up at the office covered in mud.
" Although I want to take the odd expedition along a track or path, I know that a mountain bike would not be right as the thick tyres make riding on the tarmac just very hard - which is where I expect to do most of my riding.
The choice of bikes in the market is vast, with many manufacturers trying to get a share of the action. So researching the marketplace is not simple. A lot of of the bikes that I looked at were just not suitable - the majority were just not fast enough Gentle riding would be no trouble. But they just did not have the speed I was after. Then someone pointed out the Cannondale Quick .
Just one glance at the bikes in the Quick series was enough to tell me that I had found the right bike:-
" Light alloy frame, clearly designed with speed in mind. Carbon forks on the higher models in the range.
" A good range of gear ratios for (relatively) effortless hill-climbing. Again, the higher bikes in the collection have really good road bike components- not typically found on hybrid bikes.
" Mini V-brakes which have lots of power but are easy to maintain, unlike the disc brakes you often find.
" The wheels on the models towards the top of the range are truly smart - the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. I realize that they are not as sturdy as wheels with more spokes in a normal pattern, but for riding on the road, just great.
" Fairly realistic prices for what you get. You can get cheaper needless to say. But the range starts at about £600. If you have the money, you can spend up to £1100 - but this is slightly beyond my price range.
So after doing a bit of study on the Web, I made my way to the local Cannondale dealer for a test ride. I decided on a model from roughly the middle of the range, as it seemed to tick all the boxes. But it was at a price that was not going to break the bank.
I was extremely impressed with what I found. The bike felt steady, yet lively and nimble. The carbon forks absorbed most of the road vibration and the seating position was very relaxed indeed, excellent for covering the miles. Gear selection was very smooth, with a decent choice of ratios for hill-climbing.
I could see that this was a bike that I would look forward to riding home after a hard day at the office.
I didn't hesitate. I placed the order straight away. I'm going to have to wait a week or so, but the wait is certain to be worthwhile.
