It's common knowledge that babies are fun and cute. They get to wear super cute and goofy looking clothes. How many adults do you know that can get away with wearing a clown pattered sweater? You might think that it's not that hard being a baby. Many people believe that babies are merely small humans who are fully formed (except that they need to learn how to talk). While they do have seem to have only basic abilities and large needs, the truth is that babies are quite complex. Here are some facts about babies that might be new to you.
By the time most women learn that they are pregnant, their babies already have pumping hearts. Within three weeks of conception a heart is formed and starts to pump. It is pretty much right around this date that a woman realizes that she is pregnant. Most people find the fact that a few cells can be turned into an organism with functioning organs is such a small amount of time nothing short of a miracle. Isn't it marvelous that biology made the foundation of your most important muscle in such a short time? Most babies are born knowing instinctually how to swim and how to hold their breath. This is also something that your baby will rapidly forget as well. This is one of the reasons many experts are in favor of women having water births. Because the baby spends the first few months of their lives basically swimming inside their mothers' wombs, experts believe that giving birth in water helps to ease the transition. These experts believe that the water helps them smooth the way from being a totally depended fetus to being an independent baby much better than a regular hospital birth.
While crying is the baby's main way of signaling that he or she needs or wants something, there won't be any tears with that wail until a few weeks after he has been born. Tears are made up of water and hormones that are excreted when a person is under stress. This is one of the reasons people cry when they are stressed-the tears release the hormones which calms the body down. Your baby won't create this hormone until after you have given birth to him. The stress hormone does not usually start to show up until the baby has been out of the womb for at least a few weeks. Other babies can take a few months to begin producing tears when they cry.
There are lots of things about babies that most people do not know. Learning about infants and young children can be quite interesting. The better your understanding of the subject, the more fun you will have watching your kids grow up!
