Skateboarders make it all looks so simple and easy. Just keep pushing yourself off with a foot and you keep moving right along! You're skating! After getting on a board, right away you'll feel the difference and know there's more to this than you thought. The truth is it's a difficult sport to do well. But just staying on the board is one thing, are you interested to advance to more fun stuff? And wouldn't you want to eventually do all the out-there tricks skateboarders can do? Don't be all down because you're not good at it. Even world champion skateboarders had to start exactly where you are now. Let's talk about a few things you can do to get up to speed faster.

For one thing, being in decent to good physical shape will help. There's a lot more physically demanded than you may realize. Simply having strong legs is not going to get it done for you. You need to understand this sport puts a demand on all your muscles because you'll need them to maintain stability and keep your balance, and even more when you're doing more complex maneuvers other than going from A to B. If you want total control over your board you will need to be in good physical shape. A consistent work out will get you there faster. You really should get your board at a skaters specialty shop and not a department store or sporting goods store. At a skate shop the employees will be well versed in skateboarding and will be able to help you find the board you need to begin with. Most newbies use an ABEC board in the beginning. But until you try some different boards and get a feel for them, you won't know for sure what's best. A skating shop will have people better qualified to help than people who work in a department store. It really will make a difference if you listen to what they have to say about this subject. They'll have the low down on things.

Ok, the two most basic skateboarding stances are: Regular and Goofy. For the Regular skate stance you'll want the left foot forward, and the right foot in the back. The Goofy will be a reverse arrangement. There are four basic push offs you can do. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot It will take time to figure out which works best for you. With practice, you'll begin to take note of differences in the stances of different skateboarders. Just takes time to figure out what works best for you. You'll be on track to pro status before you know it if you just keep in shape and practice your basics. And then? You won't remember ever feeling uncomfortable on a board.
