You're not alone - everyone sucks at skateboarding the first time they try it. Some people are able to get the basics down quickly. And others need to have more time to get comfortable with the feel of it, the balance, and motions. If you're beginning, you'll pick-up some tips and little tricks to help you learn faster and better. So here's a few things that'll help you choose your first board and start taking those first few rides.
First, you can get into better physical condition. Skateboarding is more physically exerting than you may realize. There's more to it than just strong legs. As you skate more, you'll notice that you're making use of all muscles. Then when you start advancing you'll really notice this. It's simple, you'll get more in control over the skateboard if you're in good physical condition. A decent and respectable work-out regimen will produce faster results in your skating. It's definitely best to buy your first board at a skaters shop and not a department store. It's just that the people at a skate shop will know what you need to start with. A lot of new skaters go for the ABEC board, but you won't really know what's best in terms of size, weight, and style until you try some different ones out. Employees in a skate shop will be better prepared to help you than anywhere else. Their suggestions will be meant to help you, and they know better, so be sure to pay attention to them. They'll have all the inside scoop for you!
Goofy and Regular are two basic stances you'll want to learn. For the Regular skate stance you'll want the left foot forward, and the right foot in the back. Just switch your feet positions to do the Goofy. There are four basic push offs you can do. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot. It'll take a bit of time to decide what's best for you. Anybody can learn how to skateboard. If you can be patient and learn slowly, then you really can do anything you desire on a board. Patience is key, you'll get there soon!
