Skateboarding looks easy-get on the board, push off with one of your feet a couple of times and you're going! Now you're skateboarding! Of course, once you get on the board you quickly learn that there is more to skateboarding than meets the eye. The truth is it's a difficult sport to do well. But just staying on the board is one thing, are you interested to advance to more fun stuff? What about all of the cool tricks you see other skateboarders doing? Before you get disappointed that you can't do fancy tricks right away, you should know that even the best skateboarders in the world started out where you are now: a total newbie. There are some tips and other stuff that'll help you make faster progress.

Get in physical shape. Skateboarding is more physically demanding than meets the eye. It's not all about strong legs, either. You need to understand this sport puts a demand on all your muscles because you'll need them to maintain stability and keep your balance, and even more when you're doing more complex maneuvers other than going from A to B. The better shape you're in, the more control you'll have over the board. If you're serious about skating, a regular and good exercise program will yield excellent results. You really should get your board at a skaters specialty shop and not a department store or sporting goods store. At a skate shop the employees will be well versed in skateboarding and will be able to help you find the board you need to begin with. A lot of new skaters go for the ABEC board, but you won't really know what's best in terms of size, weight, and style until you try some different ones out. A skating shop will have people better qualified to help than people who work in a department store. It really will make a difference if you listen to what they have to say about this subject. They'll have the low down on things.

Goofy and Regular are two basic stances you'll want to learn. For the Regular skate stance you'll want the left foot forward, and the right foot in the back. The Goofy will be a reverse arrangement. There are four basic push offs you can do. Goofy (use your left foot), and Mongo Goofy: push with your front (left) foot, Regular (use your right foot to push), Mongo Regular: push with your front (right) foot It will take time to figure out which works best for you. With practice, you'll begin to take note of differences in the stances of different skateboarders. Just takes time to figure out what works best for you. You'll be on track to pro status before you know it if you just keep in shape and practice your basics. And then? You won't remember ever feeling uncomfortable on a board.
