Growing up is something that, if we're being honest, starts at conception. One second they are just a few cells and the next they've got the beginnings of brains and lungs and other important organs. Only nine months are needed to turn those few cells into a real baby that lives outside of his or her mother. Even after birth the changes happen quickly-personalities and decision making seem to happen almost at once. Things like moving on their own, needing help with diaper changes and even how they learn to speak are pretty commonly understood. Here are some facts about babies and childhood development that you might not know.
It is hard for most babies to tell the difference between one color and another when they are still very young. Not only does it take a while for the synapses in a baby's brain to fully connect, their eyes take a few months to mature as well. This is one of the reasons why babies respond better to primary colors whey they are used in a room or on toys. You should focus the color scheme for your baby on bright reds and blues and greens or even on black and white. Pastels are better for adult eyes.
This is one of the reasons that babies will sometimes choose one toy over another. Pastels are meant more for an adult's sense of cuteness while the black and white things that are so often turned down are actually better for your son or daughter's development. Even while a baby is in the womb he can hear sounds, but you already know that. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. Did you know that a fetus's ears are just as sensitive to varying decibel levels as those of an infant? The ears of an unborn infant are extremely sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. If you must listen to loud music, wear headphones as this will cut down on the noise inflicted on your baby considerably-some doctors even think that vacuum cleaners are too loud so keep the noise to a dull roar as much as you can.
Babies are able to physically communicate before they can verbally communicate. This physical communication instinct is one reason that so many parents gravitate toward programs like "baby signs." Signing programs teach babies how to use physical actions for things like hunger, thirst, tiredness, needing a diaper change, etc which helps them communicate better with their parents. Communication skills of adults who were taught physical communication style before verbal communication style are better than those who were simply taught how to talk as young kids.
