For a while now I've been trying to find a bike to suit my individual style of riding:-
" Whilst I like to cover the miles on the road, a pure road bike with drop handlebars and an uncomfortable saddle wouldn't be right. I use the bike to travel to the office, so I need a practical, comfortable bike that will take a bit of luggage. Mudguards are essential too - I can't arrive at the office covered in mud.
" I like to venture occasionally down the canal towpath, but I don't want a mountain bike with huge thick tyres that is hard to pedal on the road - and the road is where I will spend the majority of my time.
The range of bikes in the marketplace is vast, with lots of manufacturers trying to grab a share of the action. So it's not straightforward to find your way through all the possibilities. A lot of of the bikes that I checked out were simply not right - the majority of them didn't have the right design attitude They were fine for leisure riding. But they were just not made for speed. Then I discovered the Cannondale Quick.
It didn't take me long to determine that, in the Quick, I had discovered the kind of bike that would suit me ideally:-
" Lightweight alloy frame, looking as though it was built for speed. The bikes higher up the range have carbon forks as well.
" Lots of gears to help me up the hills on the way to work. The bikes at the top of the range even have road-bike gear components- something not often found on a hybrid bike.
" Mini V-brakes which have lots of power but are straightforward to maintain, in contrast to the disc brakes you so often find.
" The wheels on the models towards the top of the range are truly stylish - the paired-spoke arrangement straight out of road-bike territory. I appreciate that they are not as robust as wheels with more spokes in a conventional pattern, but these are just fine for road riding.
" Fairly sensible prices for what you get. It's true that there are cheaper bikes around. But the range starts at roughly £600. If you have the money, you can spend up to £1100 - but this is rather out of my price range.
So after doing a bit of study on the Internet, I went along to the local stockist to try one out. I chose a model from the lower half of the range, which appeared to have all the features that were most essential to me. But at the same time not too expensive for me.
I was extremely impressed with what I found. The bike felt steady, yet sprightly and nimble. The carbon forks absorbed most of the road vibration and the seating position was very comfortable indeed, just right for covering the miles. The gear change was smooth, with a good selection of ratios for hill-climbing.
I could see that this was a bike that I would look forward to riding home following a hard day at the office.
The verdict was somewhat of a no-brainer. The order was placed. My bike arrives next week. Can't wait.
