Carp Fishing Strategies to Sharpen Your Skills

Although well-regarded in Europe, carp fishing in America was not popular until recently because serious fishers didn't have a lot of respect for the carp. Carp have earned the respect of anglers, however, both for their feisty temperament and their size. For this reason, you need to be prepared with the correct bait, tackle, and tactics for carp fishing - if you want to be successful.

Carp like a variety of foods, and they will go after many types of bait you wouldn't use when fishing for other species. This is great for the carp fisher because they can simply prepare bait from food they find in their kitchens. Even the pellets you feed your animals - as well as corn and bread - attract carp. A lot of carp fishers make their own dough balls and find them very well received by the carp. You can buy some inexpensive plastic gloves to wear when you make up your bait so you don't inadvertently transfer any "human" odors onto the bait. If you don't have any gloves, wash your hands thoroughly beforehand. Carp won't touch any bait that has a human smell, whether it's from tobacco, sunscreen, aftershave, or anything else not native to their environment. You can find out if the carp are going to accept your bait - and attract them to your location at the same time - by tossing some of the bait into the water before you begin fishing. When you see that they have accepted your bait and are eating, you can go ahead and start fishing with higher hopes of catching something. An unconscious mistake newcomers to fishing make is not realizing how easy it is to frighten the fish. You have to be really prudent when you are around carp fishing areas as carp, especially, are quite sensitive. Try to keep your presence as low-key as possible as you get close to the area you plan to fish at. Your voice, especially, will carry so, if you are not alone, only talk when you need to and do it softly. When you set up your equipment, try not to make a racket. Another thing to keep in mind is being careful not to disturb the body of water you will be fishing in. This will notify the fish that you are there and they will leave before you can begin fishing. You can add a sensitivity to vibrations to a carps sensitivity of odors, sounds, and light. Walk and move about with a soft tread.

One of the challenges of carp fishing is finding and catching a carp that tops out at 50 pounds or more. Many sports anglers dream about the day this will be their experience. Carp are not the easiest fish to capture, and when you go after large ones, you must really be ready to work at it. First of all, you have to pick the right spot where larger carp can be found. This is usually an area that's not very populated and isn't over-fished. You also need lots of smaller fish to keep the larger ones fed. After you find a promising area, you need to be certain that your fishing equipment is up to the challenge of landing a big carp. You won't be happy if you hook a heavy carp with your lightweight rod and you end up losing the fish and your fishing gear. The worldly wise larger carp are very suspicious of "suspect" bait so make sure the bait you use isn't to different from the normal things the carp feed on. If they see something odd floating around their area, there is a good chance they will know you are there. Are you new to carp fishing? If so, you won't be a master immediately. It will take practice and patience to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to be an expert carp fisher. Patience, of course, as we keep stating, is one of the most important skills a carp fisher can have. Keep learning and know that your results will continue to improve over time. When you're out fishing, watch what the other carp fishers do. This is a quick and easy way to learn new tactics that you can employ in your own fishing. And, lastly, don't be afraid to try new things. Be innovative. Experiment with different bait, don't always go to the same area or spot, and vary the time of day that you go fishing. As you factor these features into your fishing and make adjustment accordingly, you will catch more and more carp.
