You probably think that babies are only good for sleeping, eating and using dozens of diapers a day. Do you understand why a baby will move his body the way he does? Has someone taught you why a baby grows up in stages? Most people don't concern themselves with the smaller details of a baby's growth. Other parents decide to learn everything they can about the way their child grows and develops as it gets older.
Every day is a surprise when you have a baby! Whether or not you are ready to know this, at least fifty percent of what you think you know about babies is wrong. You will probably learn at least a few new things when you read this article.
At birth a baby's skull has yet to fuse together. This is why it is so important for adults to be careful when handling a newborn's head. Serious damage could be done to your child's development if you are not careful when handling his or her head-be careful of that soft spot! About three months after your baby is born its skull plates will have started to fuse together and you won't have to be quite so careful with the soft spot at the back of his or her head. You do still need to be careful though because it can take up to eighteen months for the frontal parts of the skull to calcify and harden. Even while a baby is in the womb he can hear sounds, but you already know that. Many sounds cause babies to have strong reactions-reactions that have been recorded before the baby is born. The ears of an infant are sensitive to different decibel levels of sound-both inside of and outside of the womb. The ears of an unborn infant are extremely sensitive. Doctors recommend that, while women are pregnant that they keep their music, televisions, etc below the level of a modern vacuum cleaner. If you must listen to loud music, wear headphones as this will cut down on the noise inflicted on your baby considerably-some doctors even think that vacuum cleaners are too loud so keep the noise to a dull roar as much as you can.
Even though you want to avoid mercury, you can still have fish-just make sure it is a mercury free species! Many doctors recommend eating salmon regularly because it does not contain mercury the way other fish do and because it contains all sorts of healthy things that a mother needs for her growing fetus. Some think if a woman eats fish while she is pregnant that she will improve her baby's brain function and that her child will develop better communication skills than a baby born to a mother who did not consume fish while she was pregnant. Of course this has yet to be scientifically proven so, if you do not particularly like salmon, don't lose sleep over this.
There is lots of baby knowledge out there that is not well known. Interestingly, adults tend to be more patient when they have lots of information to help them understand something.
The best way to parent a baby is to arm yourself with lots of knowledge about childhood development. Good luck!
