Some marketers may be scared away from podcasting because they think it takes a lot of hi-tech gear and knowledge. Online marketers, as a group, tend to have a herd mentality, and they are quick to try the flavor of the month and walk away from methods that have worked well for years.
The truth is that having a podcast that you can offer to people is a very valuable tool to have at your disposal. There are lots of reasons to put together your own podcast. All marketers are doing their best to be different and get noticed, yet another excellent reason. We'll share some podcast tips that can help you get started, or even help if you're experienced.
Always use a quality microphone that you can depend on. Understand that not just any microphone will do for this situation. You do not have buy the best microphone money can buy, but do not go for the bargain basement varieties, either. Be sure to use a mic that will not pick-up everything in the room. Just Google it and check them out. There are so many different kinds of microphones available, so you shouldn't have trouble finding one for you. Or, take a look at some other podcasters at their sites. You will often find other podcasters who talk about their equipment and make recommendations.
Have some variety. Your instinct might be just to talk for ten minutes or so. Really, that sounds like no problem at all. But, if you're not a professional it can become boring for listeners. So what you'll do is break-up your audio with effects found in your software. That includes using music, too, but be sure you have the legal right to use it. Some musicians will release their work under a creative commons license that will allow you to use part or all of their work. Breaking up the speech is a good way to keep your listeners interested and will help to keep them from falling asleep!
Always solicit feedback from those who listen to you. No worries about the type of feedback, just let them know you'll appreciate any kind of feedback. Ask them for ways that you can improve. Of course you can always ask for topic suggestions. Do not worry too much, or at all, about getting a bruised ego about it. What you'll also be doing is helping your audience to feel like you value them. If you implement their suggestions as best you can (the ones you find appropriate), they will know that you pay attention to them. This particular approach is so powerful, plus you'll be making your marketing even better and forming stronger bonds with your audience. It's a fact that podcasting is an effective and proven promotional method for businesses. If you build up a loyal enough following you'll have a market full of people who are ready to buy what you want to sell them. You'll need to be patient and take your time to get to that point. If you have what it takes to do that, then you can enjoy success just like in any other endeavor.
