Gardening tools can help make a fantastic hobby even more fun. When you have the right tools at hand even the hardest jobs seem easy. Just because they are helpful is no reason to run out and drop your whole paycheck on them-especially if you haven't gardened before. There are definite tools that every beginning gardener needs. As you get better at gardening you will learn that there are other tools out there that can help you with your projects. Start out with a few well known "staples" in your toolbox and then buy more tools as you find that you need them. Your first gardening experience will be a lot more smooth if you have the following tools on hand.
No matter what "level" of gardener you are, you are going to want to have some good gardening gloves. Your gardening gloves will protect your hands while you work in your garden. Gloves protect your hands as you dig in the dirt-something that most gardeners find uniquely satisfying. For example, when you are pruning rosebushes or other plants with thorns, you will want to wear gloves to protect yourself against scratches and being stuck.
Gloves also provide protection for your hands when you work with substances that will leave residue behind like fertilizer and compost. Gloves can also protect your hands against bugs you might encounter on your plants or in the dirt.
Every gardener will be able to find use for a pitchfork-even if the garden plot is very small! Pitchforks can do the same things that your trowels and spades can do but on a larger scale. Pitchforks are great earth turners, compost movers and soil aerators. As compost breaks down it will need to be turned-this is something that only a pitchfork can do easily and quickly. If you don't turn the pile regularly it just hardens and becomes useless.
A wovel is essential. Gardeners can choose between wovels with short handles and wovels with long handles. A wovel is a shovel with a rounded point. A short handled wovel will help your balance while a long handled wovel does not do this.
The wovel's main purpose is to dig holes. Gardeners use wovels to help them move plants from one location to another without having to stress out about the root systems or root bulbs of the plants. You can also use your wovel to press down the earth when you plant your seedlings or move your plants from place to place. Gardening can be a great hobby or a great job! The more you learn about gardening the more you will want to purchase the tools being sold at your local plant store or gardening department. Don't buy everything right away though, just start with a few basic tools! There are "must haves" and "luxury" gardening tools and the more time you spend gardening the easier it will be to tell the two apart.
